Several members from the Oxford chapter and other professional
volunteers replaced a shower in one of our Oxford partner family
homes. The shower had to be replaced because the existing shower
was not ADA compliant and one of the family members is wheel chair
bound. She couldn't used the shower without two people
picking up the wheel chair and lifting it into the shower.
The project was quite involved. A new ADA compliant shower was ordered
and delivered in early February. The existing shower had to be removed,
a bathroom wall had to be moved to accommodate the size of the new
shower. Vent and water pipes had to be moved also. The shower
was installed and new drywall was put in place. This portion of the
project took place over three days (Friday evening, all day Sat.
and half a day Sunday).
The family was able to start using the shower late Sunday afternoon.
There is still one more phase of the project, replacing the existing
bathroom floor. The existing floor will be replaced with a tile floor.
This is scheduled to take place over one of the next couple of weekends.
The partner family is extremely pleased the we were able to put the
new shower in place.
